Indigo River Series
Indigo River Series
A series of framed, hand woven and hand dyed indigo artwork. The Indigo River series follows the journey of the dye from its linguistic origins - the Latin word meaning Indian - to its colonial history. The work explores the interconnection between Japan and India that centres this precious dye within a familiar visual language spanning centuries. The pieces bridge two cultures using the ancient Jamdani technique to highlight beautiful repairs in the cloth, much like the timeless technique of Japanese Boro. Language differs but methods such as Shashiko in Japan and Kanthe in India reinvent and revitalise old indigo cloth allowing its natural beauty and patina to evolve. This overlap within cultures reveals a shared understanding of the value of both the cloth and the dye they called “blue gold”. This stunning artwork is woven in a hand dyed silk and camel. It is framed in a simple, barely visible beech wood frame, without glass so its tactility stands out. Measures 45cm x65cm
