Sibylla Cushion
Sibylla Cushion
The Sibylla cushions are made by using surplus fabric from the weaving production which was not able to be made into blankets. Finding cotton fabric that compliments each colour way for backing fabric, each cover comes with a feather pad.
In the 17th Century an illustrator called Maria Sibylla Merian travelled across Surinam with her daughter at the age of fifty-two. This was an astonishing achievement for a woman at the time. She recorded the flora, fauna and wildlife she encountered, creating beautiful paintings that had a fantastical feel to them. The insects she documents were often seen in Europe for the first time and her impact on the scientific establishment can still be seen today. The Catasticta Sibyllae butterfly is named after her.
This collection is inspired by extraordinary female explorers and their sketchbooks. This collection evokes an artist’s palette much like the watercolours used by these women on their expeditions. The harsh environments limited what they could carry on their journeys reducing the variability of colour, which is demonstrated in the tonal hues of the design. These are double cloth blankets with a distinctly different pattern on the other side, produced in small batches in a Lancashire mill.
The Sibylla blanket is woven in a beautiful valley on the Lancashire/ Yorkshire border in England, in one of the few working mills dating back to the 1700s. This collection is woven with 100% geelong lambswool, spun locally. Utilizing regional double cloth weaving knowledge with a contemporary twist each soft lambswool blanket is a cherished heirloom. Each design is blanket stitched with yarn surplus from the weaving process.
With every woven blanket you will receive a signed card from the weaver.
